What's the best camera I can buy if I want to take up photography?

I really enjoy the idea of taking up photography and i'm going to take a workshop in august. The problem is that all I have right now is a Samsung SL620 digital camera, and even though its a pretty good camera, it really doesn't cut it for me. I always have to edit my pictures and modify them in some way in order for me to be satisfied with my shot. So I want to know: what's the best professional camera I can buy if I want to take up photography? I've already made up my mind and I want to get a Canon , but again, which model should I get? I've heard the Canon Rebel t2i is a good one, would you recommend it? If not, which one would you recommend? Also, please make sure that the one you recommend has a good lens and easily adjustable focus

Canon Rebel T2i is a very good camera, but it costs $1030 with 18-55mm

Remember lenses will outlast camera bodies, so leave enough money to buy an extra lens, rather than spending too much on a camera. Extra lenses give you a wider scope of things to photograph, from insects to wildlife.
