what kind of all terrain tires can I put on an 18 inch rim?
I want to put some all terrain tires on a 2008 4 door jeep wrangler
I would like bigger rims and still have rugged looking tires
I have a trail-modified wrangler that is regularly driven on pavement. The wrangler has 8" of lift, 1" of fender trimming and turning 37" tires with no rub of any kind. I've had many different types and brands of tires. If you are planning to go with an 18" rim, I assume that you will not be doing a lot of serious off-roading other than the occassional dirt road.
If this is true, then stay away from MT or Mud Terrain Tires. You don't need them. They are mostly very noisy on the road and wear very quickly. I'd say go with BFGoodrich All Terrain T/A KO if you have to go with an 18" rim.
The tire that I have the highest praise for is the Goodyear Wrangler MT/R. Although it has a Mud Terrain rating, it's tread lasts and lasts. Hot pavement doesn't seem to bother the tire and it is an animal in the trails. When I got mine, they were backordered because the military was purchasing EVERYTHING in their stock. A true testiment to their quality. The only drawback is they aren't offered in many sizes for an 18" rim.

When you are out for a ride in your 4X4 truck you have to make sure everything is perfect. You need the right lift, right shocks, right brakes. When you are going to take your 4X4 truck off road you need to make sure you have the right tires. Tires that fit and work for what you need.
There are many tires out there that will help with off road driving. You just have to make sure you are getting a set of tires that is right for you. Here are some things to look at when you are choosing off road tires.
1. Brand: Is it a brand you have heard of and trust?
2. Tread: Is it the right tread for what you are looking to do?
3. Size: Are you even going to be able to fit it on your 4X4 vehicle?
4. Type: Is this an all terrain tire or something that is off and on road? Also, does this type of tire fit with your type of vehicle?
5. Look: Is it going to look good on your truck?
The top 4 items are obviously the most important things for you to be looking at. You will want to make sure you are looking around at different brands and types. But, always keep in mind that you want to look good while you are rolling around in the dirt and mud. I don't know of one person who is not concerned about the way their tires look on their 4X4 truck.
Don't give up on going off road just because you have to look harder for the tires. They are not that hard to find! Just make sure you are using the right ones.
